Super Metroid

Just beat the title for the first time. Helps actually owning a copy and understanding how to play the game. Back when I was kid playing the game I could never fully grasp the concept of how you were supposed to approach the game for some reason. Mostly because I never had too much time with it. But after playing lots of Metroid the last few years and particularily Fusion and Zero Mission in this regard, understanding Super Metroid wasn't that difficult now. And in the end I beat it in 6:31 with a 76% rate which is okay for a first ever real playthrough.

And now for a mini-review. Can definately see that Fusion and Zero Mission drew heavily from this game. The character graphics definately still look good but the background art is a tad drab as compared to ZM or Fusion. The controls are pretty much spot on though feel floaty but this is due to my being more familiar with the two newer 2D Metroid games which move a little faster. I love how they implented the dash into the game (though who thought of taking life from you when you use the various hyper moves?) and hope now that they have the proper amount of buttons with the DS that it will make a return. The music is really good and set a good feel for the game. It wasn't insanely difficult but still manges to stay challenging.

All in all the game, like any really good game, holds up exceptionally well 12 years after its release date. Best 2D Metroid? Probably, I beat it in two days of playing which I don't think I did for Fusion or ZM even and I really enjoyed those. Plus I'll make my friend Stephan Weis happy that I said that. If I had dared say ZM or particularily Fusion were better he might be on his way to NoDak to find a kill me. So in respect for my life I will say Super Metroid is the best of 2D Metroid.
