Interesting
I'm watching a documentary on the history of comic books and it amazes me the similarities I see between them and the videogame industry. Both start out relatively obscure and seen as children's entertainment, both see a large movement against them as people of the time claim that they are the cause to all the problems with youth, both have a crash of some sort, and both adopt self-regulation to attempt to combat it. The finer details are differant but otherwise they are startlingly similar.
What is probably goes over the head of many congresspeople today is that they were on the receiving end of this back when they were children. Their favorite entertainment was seen as evil and corrupting and now these former kids are attempting to do the same with videogames.
Apparently it is a self-replicating cycle. I have no doubts that people of my generation or younger will crusade against some other form of entertainment as being evil or some nonsense. All the while failing to see that they are just hypocritically fighting the same fight that was fought against them back in the '50s.
