Favorite Comic Strip/Characters
Any normal kid grows up probably thinking that the funnies are the most important part of the newspaper. Well I'm not much differant and since I'm bored I'm going to rank my favorite strips and characters.
Top 5 Favorite Comic Strips
1. Calvin & Hobbes - This is really no contest. Calvin & Hobbes even 10 years after Bill Watterson decided to retire the series is still easily better than 99% of what is out there today. Imaginitive, original, touching, hilarious, etc. There aren't enough adjectives for this strip.
2. Far Side - Might be the strangest comic I've ever seen. Gary Larson's twisted humor and rather obscure jokes still make me laugh and scratch my head even today.
3. Peanuts - A classic that managed to stay fairly good for over 50 years which is pretty tough. Charles Schultz (R.I.P) should be commended for his characters and stories which are still entertaining even today. Though if Charlie Brown ever grows up, I think he's going to have a real complex going on.
4. Dilbert - Right now my favorite on-going strip. As absurd a take on office life as there is, Scott Anderson's great writing and drawing style (though why doesn't Dilbert or Dogbert have a mouth?) should be good for quite some time.
5. Fox Trot - The best family comic I've seen. The characters are all realistic, though exaggerated, and Bill Amend's take on videogames (through Jason and his brother) are some of the funniest and most intelligent takes on gaming.
Top 5 Comic Characters
1. Calvin - A completely obnoxious, whiny, self-centered, brat in all of us. Yet somehow Bill managed to make him a 3 dimensional character who we can relate to in other ways.
2. Charlie Brown - While always seeming to suffer some sort of failure or defeat, Chuck's upbeat and never say die attitude is still engrossing.
3. Hobbes - Calvin's counterpart and the side of us all that is sensible and rational. Plus he's a tiger. What more do you need?
4. Garfield - Lazy, unenthusiastic, apathetic, hungry, likes sleeping in, etc. Frankly there is a lot of my personality in Garfield. Too bad the overall comic has become far too repetitive.
5. Jason Fox (Fox Trot) - Like Calvin taken down a few notches but probably the funniest character in the strip.
