Beyond Good & Evil
I got this game for Christmas 2003 partially because of a lot of the hardcore gamer hype that was centered around it. From what I remember words of "Zelda Killer" were out there for it. What I got out of it was a decent game that was a solid sort of Zelda meets Metal Gear Solid but not nearly as good as either. The controls while for the most part were good but suffered from poor camera controls and featured "poor man's" versions of the LoZ and MGS. The battle system was designed much like the very disappointing Star Fox Adventures but fell quite short to Zelda's lofty standard (in part because lock-on was automatic which could cause problems) and the sneaking wasn't nearly as satisfying as MGS's. What we ended up with was a solid title, with a decent story (but not nearly as good as promised), average gameplay, better than average graphics, and some decent voice work. Good, not great overall. The game didn't sell well at all and has since grown a rather cult following begging for a sequel which probably will never happen. I personally don't feel this game belong even nearly the same area as ICO in the land underappreciated gems but thats just my opinion.
Now this guy, Mark B, at Inside Pulse really goes after those people who think of the game in the same lofty regard as games like ICO. He does a lot of things I don't really care for in his assertions that because he didn't like it and it didn't sell well then everyone who played it must also have hated it except for those reviewers who must be in some sort of perpetual conspiracy to lift the game to "uncovered gem" status or assuming that everyone who did is some sort of idiot. I really can't stand that sort of arrogance. Just because I don't like the GTA series doesn't mean that everyone else didn't or shouldn't like the game despite the fact that I can't understand why anyone would. To me he is ignoring that people have opinions outside his own and just because a game didn't sell well doesn't mean it must suck, cause then games like ICO would have to have sucked cause that game was also fairly well-received by most media (in fact on the overal for the PS2 version is only 3% lower than ICO) but sold poorly. A lot of people really liked the game obviously and while I do agree with him to some extent that the game was overrated it wasn't a horrible game by any means.
Also he goes on some self-righteous rant about gaming press and various titles he wants to see and doesn't see the support he wants for them to be brought over here. Get over yourself. Not everyone sees things the way you do, nor should you expect it. There isn't some grand conspiracy against you and the games you want to play. If you are going to be self-righteous about gaming, great for you, but don't expect others to agree with you all the time or any of the time.
