I just caught this movie (in lieu of the sold out Narnia) and it was good sci-fi fare. I've never seen the anime (though I heard it is confusing as hell). Unlike some sci-fi these days its story isn't presented as some obtuse impossible to understand mess and the CGI while there isn't obnoxiously done. The world is futuristic yet not doesn't have that plastic sheen of many sci-fi movies.

I'd recommend seeing it if you like sci-fi. Never seeing the anime doesn't seem like a major requirement to get it. So yeah go see it.
