Movie Ranking Time Whoo!

Since I'm sitting here bored I thought, "Hey Chris, why not rank the various movies you've seen in theaters this year? You know, just for the heck of it?" I then agreed with myself. Luckily no one was around.

So [echo]My Top 5 Movies That I've Seen in Theaters of 2005!!!!!! [/echo]

1. Batman Begins

I wouldn't say I'm a big comic book fan but I do like me some Batman. And the last two "Batman" movies just reeked, especially Batman and Robin. Even Tim Burton's darker Batman movies left a lot to be desired. Mostly by the fact that Batman was very underdevolped. All four movies spent more time on the villain than on Batman who as far as comic book characters go is incredibly interesting, unlike the more cut and dry Superman.

But man was this movie awesome. Big names in the supporting casts (though the girl who played Rachel Dawes while not awful wasn't that strong and I think her part should have been Harvey Dent minus the love story angle) including Morgan Freeman, Micheal Caine, and Gary Oldman who did very well to breathe life into their characters. Christian Bale made a great Batman/Bruce Wayne as opposed to the previous ones who only made a good Batman or Bruce Wayne.

The fact that the director made the first half the movie an explanation of Batman's thought process was so important especially to show that Bruce had to go through hell just to get where he was. He just wasn't sitting in his mansion one day and decided to fight crime. Plus everything was plausible in a sense. The armour, the weapons, even the Batmobile made sense especially how a young Bruce Wayne got them in his early days. It just seemed real as opposed to the last two and even the first two. Gotham itself was well done and looked modern and without the cheap goth look or the neon-lit look that the last two had and many despise. Plus whatever CG they used was done subtlely which says alot in todays CG heavy, albeit necessary, superhero movies.

I'll recommend this movie to almost anyone. It just incredibly well done.

2. Howl's Moving Castle

I'm an anime and general animation fan and I've always liked Hayao Miyazaki's work for the most part and this is the best of his stuff I've seen. Very well animated with good dubbing and a very deep subtext to it that makes you want to watch and rewatch.

If you are an animation fan this should be a no-brainer.

3. Kung Fu Hustle

Very funny martial arts spoof that centers around a war between an axe weilding gang and a street full of the poor some of which happen to be master martial artists. The story essentially rotates around a wannabe gangster who probably could be beaten up by anyone and anything.

The action is done in such an exaggerated way that it'll keep you guessing. The CG makes for some fantastic fight scenes and some good gags. The last fight makes the Burly Brawl in the Matrix: Reloaded look like a sissy fight.

Recommend if you like martial arts movies and also enjoy comedy with lots of sight gags.

4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The first movie based off the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a widely cherished movie. Tim Burton's take on the book is more accurate to the source and isn't a remake which is good. Johnny Depp does well as Willy Wonka, coming off as a bit nuts, which works though I don't think his Wonka was as good as Gene Wilder's Wonka. He does kind of come off as Micheal Jackson in a candy factory.

But the jokes are funny, the cast very good especially the kid who plays Charlie, and the Oompa Loompa songs are hilarious in their own way especially the last one.

If you like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's sense of weirdness you should like this movie and then go see Corpse Bride this fall.

5. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

To say I had low expectations for this movie would be an understatement. The last two really blew and I expected more of the same. But despite what I expected I did enjoy Episode III, despite it's mediocre acting and silly plot. It still doesn't compare to the first 3 movies by any degree but compared to the last two it is damned near a masterpiece.

I'll recommend it to Star Wars fans and CG geeks.
